Luang Prabang Travel Highlights of Laos

Luang Prabang Travel Highlights of Laos
I left from Thailand and headed to the boarder and crossed by boat into Laos at Chiang Khong. Practically every tourist going this route takes the slow boat to Luang Prabang.

I choose to go against the flow of the slow boat – hearing that it was 2 days of partying – and take the bus to Luang Prabang instead. Lying some distance outside of Huay Xai, I find the bus station quite desolate – only a couple of tourist and a few locals.

After conversing with some local women I am offered the strangest “fruit” I have ever seen – it looks and stains very much like a mango yet has the texture of a sweet potato and a flavor somewhere in between.

Luang Prabang Travel Highlights of Laos

The bus is basically empty and the drive through the rugged mountainous terrain is spectacular –

layers of mountain ranges fading from brilliant green to pale blue!

It is a 14 hour drive but having two seats to myself, I sleep quite well –

although I was thrown completely out of my seat more than once by some rather bumpy roads.

Luang Prabang

We reach Luang Prabang before sunrises and we – Heather, a new friend from the bus, and I – set out to see the town in the mist of the early morning.

Monks walk the streets receiving food from the faithful.

We climbed to the top of Phu Si Hill to see the sunrise but unfortunately the fog was too thick but still the view is beautiful!

Heather and I need visas for Vietnam so we drop our passports off at the Vietnam embassy and are told we can pick them up the next morning.

Nong Khiaw

I decided to backtrack a bit and catch a songthaew – a very cheap but painful way to travel – to Nong Khiaw about 4 hours north of Luang Prabang. Heather will pick my passport up for me at the embassy and I will meet up with her the day after next to head to Vang Vieng together.
